A friend called and asked me to attend a Sound Bath yoga session with her. My first thought was no, it will interrupt my routine for the week. This is race week and I don’t like to have appointments or other things to do leading up to the race. In June, I wrote about sounds and frequency, and the very next week she invites me to a Sound Bath class. I have never done one and even looked online to see if there was any in the area. After my first thought to decline, then I realized that it was exactly what l wanted to experience. I decide that it is ok to get off routine and go do this indulgent class with my friend.
My June write up on Sounds and Frequency found here, Express Yourself.
This is my first experience of a sound bath yoga class. The setting is in a historical building used as a visual art center. It has an old creaky floor and high ceilings which makes for its own music. The addition of music from the crystal bowls was quite soothing.
My friends and I venture on this scene not knowing exactly what to expect. I assured my friends that with a sound bath the movements would mostly likely be slow and on the floor. We were the first ones to arrive in anticipation of a full house. I suggested we get bold and just place our mats front and center. The teacher loved that as most people retreat to the back of class. Being in front helps me to focus on the intention of the class rather than people watching. As predicted the movements were slow and easily linked with breath. Once the music started, I could feel the vibrations in my jaw as it started to loosen up. This is where I hold a lot of tension so becoming relaxed was quick for me. Then as the music was more intense, I could feel the vibrations move my body with the rhythm. It was something I was aware of but not in my direct control.
The class lasted an hour long and by the time we got to the stillness at the end, I was ready for the rest and softer sounds. Feeling the vibrations in my body and being in a group was very healing. I left feeling revived. We then went to dinner at an outdoor cafe. I found myself very talkative and sharing things that I normally keep to myself.
This ties directly into the post I wrote last month on the throat chakra regarding the healing qualities of frequency and honoring our own voice. The link is listed above. Interesting ideas, concepts and inspiration come from trying out new experiences. Keep moving forward on and off the mat.
The spa I go to has a sound bath class, and I have always wanted to experience one, so I will move this one up on my list, too! :)
